An antique Italian reliquary pendant containing a devotional relic of S. Martini E. (Saint Martin, Bishop). The relic rests on its original red silk ground, framed with gilt devotional paper beneath original glass.
This type of reliquary traditionally holds a minute devotional relic fragment — often a small thread, piece of cloth, or occasionally a tiny particle of bone — attributed to Saint Martin and preserved as a sign of honour and spiritual intercession.
Saint Martin of Tours (4th century) — one of the most beloved saints of Western Christianity. A former Roman soldier turned monk, he is remembered for cutting his cloak in half to clothe a freezing beggar. He became Bishop of Tours and is the patron saint of France, soldiers, tailors, and those seeking protection. His shrine became an important pilgrimage stop on the Camino de Santiago.
The reverse retains its original internal red-wax ecclesiastical seal, confirming the relic’s authenticity and integrity. The chain shown is modern and included for wear, but not original.
